Lodi Islamics Secretly Taped For Three Years Before Terror Charges

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — Federal officials say they secretly tape-recorded members of Lodi´s Pakistani community for nearly three years before they brought terror-related charges against a father and son and sought to deport two Islamic religious leaders this summer.

Fifty tapes in Urdu and Pashto were turned over this week to lawyers for Hamid Hayat and his father, Umer Hayat. Both are charged with lying to the F-B-I by denying the younger man attended a terrorism camp in Pakistan.

The tapes are a fraction of the recordings made by an informant or undercover investigator starting in August 2002. A federal judge ruled today that the men´s trial must delayed by at least 60 days from its scheduled start later this month.
