New Dean of Learning Support at Columbia

Dr. Carolyn Buck has been named Columbia College´s dean of learning support services, according to Dr. Jim Riggs, president of the college. She will assume her new post on Feb. 22.

Dr. Buck comes to Columbia College with a career in education that spans over 33 years, of which 23 were involved in post-secondary education. She was most recently affiliated with San Diego Mesa College where she served as the articulation officer since 1996, securing transfer and articulation agreements between their college and other local, state and national educational institutions.

For the past seven years, Dr. Buck has also served as the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) representative on interview and screening committees in the San Diego Community College District. As such, she has been involved with college diversity committees to develop programs to heighten the awareness of staff and faculty about ethnically and culturally diverse people, women, and the disabled.

In her new Sonora position, Dr. Buck will provide strong leadership to the college´s learning support office by overseeing curriculum, enrollment management, articulation, college catalog content, staff development, institutional accountability, selected student development services and the semester schedules of classes.

“We welcome Dr. Carolyn Buck to our college campus and look forward to the addition of her professional expertise to further our institutional effectiveness,” said Dr. Riggs. “Throughout her career, she has demonstrated the administrative leadership needed to facilitate student transition through higher education.”

Dr. Buck holds a bachelor´s degree in psychology from Bennett College, master´s degree in guidance and counseling from North Carolina A&T State University, and a joint doctorate in education from San Diego State University and Claremont Graduate University.

She joined San Diego Mesa College in 1990 where she served as the dean of student development and matriculation for six years before being named articulation officer. Prior to that, she was the acting assistant director, Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS), and coordinator of the Tutorial Center for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
