State’s Highest Court Upholds Suspension Of Girl’s Driving Priviledges

A young girl still won´t be able to get behind the wheel of a car for a year because she drove after taking cough medicine.

The California Supreme Court has upheld a 1993 law in which motorists under the age of 21 automatically lose driving privileges if even a trace amount of alcohol is detected in their blood. The case involves Karli Bobus, who was pulled over after taking a capful of cough medicine to battle a cold.

The California Highway Patrol says that the blood alcohol level of Bobus — who was 16-years-old at the time — measured the equivalent of roughly one beer´s worth of alcohol.

The teen wasn´t prosecuted for drunken driving, but her license was suspended for one year. Bobus appealed the suspension to state´s highest court, which upheld the suspension without comment.
