Cell Tower Issue Still Alive

Sonora, CA — The bottom line coming out of Tuesday´s county supervisors´ meeting was “no final decision” on the devisive cell phone tower issue.

Following public comment and discussion, it was decided to table the issue until November 14. The supervisors will reopen the discussion at 11AM.

The president and C.E.O. of the Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce, George Segarini, is an outspoken proponent of a relaxation of the current ordinance which he feels restricts cell phone usage in the Mother Lode. Segrarini maintains the ordinance is a hindrance to the growth of commerce in Tuolumne County.

Second District Supervisor Paolo Maffei commented that perhaps cell phone towers could be constructed on land not covered by the ordinance such as the Stanislaus National Forest or even Hetch Hetchy. Maffei agrees that improved coverage is needed but it must be provided without endangering the health and/or well being of the Mother Lode citizenry.
