Horse Rescue In Mountain Ranch

Sponsored by:

Mountain Ranch, CA– It was an eventful day for Tilly the horse in Mountain Ranch yesterday. The three year old female horse had fallen 12 feet down a well located on Rail Road Flat Road early in the morning.

According to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, the owner of the horse had missed Tilly during the morning feeding and searched the ranch without success. It wasn’t until Tilly’s owner let another horse run loose in the area and that horse began whinnying for Tilly. Tilly answered, allowing the owner to find her stuck in a 150 year old well.

Multiple resources reponded to help with Tilly’s rescue including Calaveras County Animal Services, units from Cal Fire and Central Fire, and Tom Atkin and Rob Lyons from the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office.  Tilly’s owner even borrowed a large fork lift from a neighbor and a veterinarian from Amador County was called to the scene. After crews sedated Tilly, the horse was lifted out of the well with a fork lift at around 5 pm suffering no injuries.
