WHAT’S AT STAKE?
The Sun Devils, under new coach Herm Edwards, are looking to go 3-0 in nonconference play for the third time in five seasons after upsetting Michigan State 16-13 at Tempe. They’re also looking to avenge a 30-20 loss to the Aztecs in Tempe last season in which RB Rashaad Penny, now with the Seattle Seahawks, had 353 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. San Diego State coach Rocky Long calls these “opportunity” games. Last year the Aztecs beat ASU and Stanford of the Pac-12 in consecutive weeks.
San Diego State RB Juwan Washington (314 yards, four TDs, 60 carries) against an Arizona State defense led by coordinator Danny Gonzales. Gonzales spent the previous seven seasons on SDSU’s defensive staff, before being hired away by Edwards. ASU has the No. 1 run defense in the country, allowing 1.07 yards per rush.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
