Man in handcuffs breaks free of deputies, jumps to his death
SANTA ROSA, Calif. — Authorities in Northern California say a handcuffed man who was detained as a suicide risk broke free of deputies on the top level of a casino parking garage and jumped to his death.
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s office says the fatal leap Monday off the Graton Resort and Casino’s five-floor garage occurred minutes after deputies had pulled the man back from the building’s edge.
The Press Democrat reports the man was identified as 24-year-old Geoffrey Wise Bertagnolli of Gardnerville, Nevada.
The office says deputies called to the casino found Bertagnolli standing on top of a 4-foot tall wall on the eastern side of the parking structure and talking to his wife nearby.
It says it appeared Bertagnolli and his wife had been living out of their car.
