San Bernardino police say 5 gun homicides possibly connected

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Four shootings that resulted in five deaths and two injuries on the west side of San Bernardino are believed to be connected and gang-related, police said this week.

Attackers used handguns and high-powered rifles to target victims between August and January, the Sun newspaper reported Wednesday.

Some of those shot, including a 25-year-old middle school teacher, were randomly chosen, investigators believe. Others were possibly known to their attackers, according to officials.

The common thread was that the slayings happened west of Interstate 215, in an area of high gang activity, the newspaper reported.

At a Tuesday news conference, police showed surveillance videos that they hope will jog witnesses’ memories.

“There are people out there that saw these homicides, saw these shootings, that saw what happened, and we need those folks to come forward,” said interim police Chief Eric McBride.

Police have beefed up patrols in neighborhoods where the attacks occurred.
