Sacramento, CA — Governor Schwarzenegger is authorizing a $150 million loan to fund the state´s moribund stem cell institute, which has been stalled by lawsuits.
The move comes a day after President Bush vetoed a measure that would have expanded federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.
Schwarzenegger says he´s committed to advancing stem cell research in California and it can´t wait. He and others believe stem cells could help people with chronic diseases and injuries.
Voters approved the state´s stem cell agency in 2004. They gave $3 billion in bonds to fund ten years of research the federal government won´t pay for.
Anti-abortion and anti-tax groups have sued to stop the agency and could tie up funding until at least next year.
