Sacramento, CA — California´s budget deadline slipped by Thursday with lawmakers still unable to reach a compromise over funding health care for children of illegal immigrants.
It marked the 20th consecutive year the Legislature failed to meet the June 15th deadline. Lawmakers will continue negotiating today. They are now working to reach an agreement on the $131 billion budget and send it to Governor Schwarzenegger before it takes effect July first.
A Democrat proposal to expand health care to children of illegal immigrants remains a key sticking point. The plan would cost more than $300 million annually. Republicans and Democrats also have different plans for how to pay down state debt and allocate education dollars.
