Sonora, CA — The West Sheer prescribed burn is expected to be ignited on the Summit Ranger District today.
Smoke from this planned five day project could impact the Pinecrest and Strawberry areas.
The purpose of the fire is to reduce the chance of catastrophic wildfire in the future by reducing natural fuels and fuels created by the West Sheer Thinning Project.
Burning also replaces nutrients to the soil, which inturn, promotes healthier plants and food for wildlife. Fire managers have developed and are following a prescribed fire burn plan based on complexity, risk, weather forecasts and fire behavior. Fire managers are monitoring the fires to ensure that balancing forest health and public needs for air quality are met. Fire managers take into account the wind pattens and how the smoke is lying down before continuing to burn.
10 firefighters, two engines and one dozer will be used during the current operation.
