Sacramento, CA — Governor Schwarzenegger sets off on a statewide bus tour today that marks the formal start of his re-election campaign.
The governor faced no credible opposition in Tuesday´s primary, easily winning his party´s nomination as his would-be Democratic rivals battled it out. State Treasurer Phil Angelides turned in a narrow victory over state Controller Steve Westly following a Democratic primary race that many voters ignored.
The state´s growing economy and Schwarzenegger´s legislative successes have given the governor´s public standing a boost since his disastrous special election last year. He´ll also benefit from a tendency among California voters to re-elect incumbents.
But Schwarzenegger´s re-election is far from certain in a state where only one in three voters is Republican.
