Governor To Bypass Minimum Wage Increase Bill
Sacramento, CA — Governor Schwarzenegger intends to bypass newly approved legislation that would boost the minimum wage by a dollar-an-hour and automatically tie future increases to inflation.
Thursday the Senate approved a bill requiring the automatic increases for close to a million-and-a-half minimum wage earners. The Assembly passed a similar bill Wednesday.
Schwarzenegger vetoed two previous minimum wage increases but now supports the increase without the automatic annual inflation adjustments. He´s asking a long-dormant state commission to approve his proposal when it meets today.
The California Labor Federation is filing a competing petition asking the commission to tie the increase to the Consumer Price Index similar to the legislative bills that have passed this week.
