Sacramento, CA — With a third of the electorate still undecided, the Democratic primary race for governor is basically a dead heat.
This is according to a poll released this morning by the Public Policy Institute of California. State Treasurer Phil Angelides has 35% of the vote to state Controller Steve Westly´s 32%. That´s a statistically insignificant lead that falls within the margin of error.
Angelides appears to have received a boost after winning the state Democratic Party endorsement on April 29.
The number of undecided voters, most of whom are women, is much higher than it was at this point in the two previous governor´s races. Pollsters say that may reflect uncertainty among Democrats about who would be the better candidate to face Governor Schwarzenegger this fall.
