Sonora, CA — Road conditions in the Mother Lode may get better if federal aid is approved.
Governor Schwarzenegger has declared a State of Emergency for road conditions in 40 counties, including Tuolumne and Calaveras.
Reports indicate CalTrans has been directed by the governor to request federal aid to fix or reconstruct more than $70 million worth of highways.
Tuolumne County Public Works Director Peter Rei says they have already begun repair work on several storm damaged roads, but he says getting reimbursed can be a problem.
The state has agreed to pay 75% of eligible costs, however although they have already made the repairs, some may be ruled ineligible for reimbursement, forcing the county to cut spending elsewhere.
