Sacramento, CA — Governor Schwarzenegger is naming a state finance expert as the third leader in two months for the state´s troubled prison system.
James Tilton will take over as acting secretary of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He replaces Acting Secretary Jeanne Woodford, a 27-year prison veteran who will retire in July.
Woodford replaced Secretary Roderick Hickman, who resigned in frustration in February. Naming Tilton acting secretary means there is no need for Senate confirmation for the $129,000-a-year job.
Hickman had been in a brutal confirmation fight when he stepped down. Hickman hinted that he was frustrated at fading support from Schwarzenegger and opposition from the powerful prison guards´ union.
