Sacramento, CA — An Assembly committee has approved reimbursing the secretary of state´s office $9.1 million for the cost of last year´s special election.
The appropriation is needed so the office can start mailing ballot pamphlets next week for the June primary election.
Most of the cost of last November´s special election, estimated to be $53 million, was borne by individual counties.
A spokesman for Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez says legislators would consider reimbursing counties during this year´s budget process once a final cost has been determined.
Voters rejected all eight of the initiatives on the November 8 ballot, including the four promoted by Gov. Schwarzenegger.
