Sacramento, CA — The amount of students failing to meet California´s standard for proficiency has Legislators considering redefining the word “proficient.”
By doing this, Legislators could radically affect how the government rates the education system.
Critics say the state´s goal should be to improve schools, not alter words. The California School Boards Association and the Association of California School Administrators have taken no position on the bill; however, the creator of the High School Exit Exam, Jack O´Connell opposes it.
He says it´s a measure that would have the net effect of watering down standards. Governor Schwarzenegger has yet to comment on the issue.
