Deadline Approaches for Statewide Bond Issue

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — The Assembly Republican leader says his caucus isn´t to blame for lack of a deal on public works bonds. This comes two days before a deadline to place bond measures on the June ballot.

Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has disputed a statement made by Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata that Assembly Republicans are the main stumbling block in reaching an agreement because they don´t want any bonds.

Legislative leaders and Governor Schwarzenegger have been trying to reach agreement on a bond package in time to put at least some bond proposals on the June 6th ballot.

Money raised by selling the bonds would be used to expand highways, upgrade levees, build new schools and make certain other infrastructure improvements.

The secretary of state´s office continues to say that Friday is the cutoff dayfor lawmakers to put those bonds on the June ballot, although McCarthy and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez have suggested that deadline could be extended until next week.
