Sacramento, CA– California officials released new job figures today, showing the addition of 18,300 payroll jobs in January.
The number of unemployed people looking for work fell by 151-thousand compared to the same month last year. The state Employment Development Department reports more than 14.9 million people in the state held payroll jobs during the month.
The figure doesn´t include farm workers and the self-employed. Unemployment has been declining, but the job gains in January followed the addition of 4,900 payroll jobs in December, far fewer jobs than was originally estimated. The state revised downward the original December figure of 24,300 payroll jobs.
Economist Steven Levy with the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy says the two two-month trend amounts to modest job gains and suggests the state´s economy is barely keeping pace with the nation.
