Sacramento, CA — Governor Schwarzenegger says he´s always had mostly Democrats on his staff, despite being a Republican.
So he says he´s surprised by the furor when he hired longtime Democratic activist Susan Kennedy as his chief of staff. Some conservative Republicans plan to push the party to withdraw support for him at the party´s convention in San Jose next month.
Schwarzenegger says he chooses his staff based on who´s the best, not their party affiliation. He says no one thought he was a traitor when he married Maria Shriver, a Democrat.
He spoke today at a luncheon for the Sacramento Press Club, a group of reporters and public relations officials.
The governor pushed his $222 billion public works proposal, and took questions from the audience on everything from the war in Iraq to assisted suicide.
