Schwarzenegger Denies Clemency To State’s Oldest Condemned Inmate
Sacramento, CA — Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has denied clemency to Clarence Ray Allen, the oldest man on California´s death row.
The 75-year-old Allen had asked Schwarzenegger for clemency, claiming he was too old and frail to be put to death on January 17th at San Quentin State Prison.
Allen ordered the murder of three people at a Fresno market while he was behind bars at Folsom State Prison in 1980. He has been on death row for more than 23 years.
His attorneys have also asked the US Supreme Court to block the execution under the same legal theory, that it would be unconstitutionally cruel and unusual to put him to death because of his advanced age and health problems.
