Sacramento, CA — State Senator Dave Cox was not at all pleased with Monday´s 21-17 vote that approved AB-8.
This bill, authored by Democrats Fabian Nunez and Don Perata, would reform health care by creating a 7.5% tax on businesses throughout the state. Republicans, including Cox, say such a bill would cost a quarter-of-a-million Californians their jobs.
Governor Schwarzenegger has already said he will veto the bill because it would create a $6.6 billion tax increase, the largest tax increase on businesses in state history.
Republicans added that AB-8 is likely illegal under federal law and it also violates the California Constitution requiring a two-thirds vote for tax increases.
