Sonora, CA — The respective sheriffs of the two Mother Lode counties appeared on this weekend´s edition of Mother Lode Views.
Dennis Downum from Calaveras County and Jim Mele from Tuolumne County stated that both counties are in dire need of new jails. Sheriff Downum´s jail will only house 65 inmates in San Andreas, and he comments that the antiquated linear style of his jail provides for a very dangerous situation for his staff.
Mele comments on the need not only for a new jail but for a combination jail-administration center where all facets of his department including detectives, the Tuolumne Narcotics Team and the Search and Rescue team would be housed within a single facility.
Both sheriffs discuss AB-900 which would provide 75 percent of the funding for the new facilities.
