Los Angeles, CA — Two Russians, convicted of five murders and the dumping of the bodies in New Melones Reservoir more than five years ago, received the death penalty in a Los Angeles courtroom Monday.
The jury had already voted for the death penalty for 40 year old Jurijus Kadamovas and 41 year old Iouri Mikhel. In federal death penalty cases, the verdict is binding on the attending judge.
Prosecutors maintained the two men kidnapped affluent Russian business people in Los Angeles, collected as much as $1.2 million in ransom from their families, and then killed the victims.
Because the death penalty is in effect, the cases will be automatically reviewed. With the current moratorium, there are over 600 California prisoners on Death Row.
