Angels Camp, CA — Calaveras County School Superintendent John Brophy labels Governor Schwarzenegger´s proposed 10% across-the-board budget cuts for education as devastating.
Overall Brophy says such cuts, if approved by both houses of the legislature, would cost Calaveras County approximately $4 million a year. That would amount to $600 per student. Such cuts would cost the average elementary school between $300,000 and $350,000 per year which could dictate the layoff of from three to five teachers.
Brophy adds that the Governor has even called for cuts in catagorical departments such as special education which would be a violation of federal mandates.
Brophy says that while in the minds of the public education always tops the list, the Governor is treating that entity like every other state department with his proposed across-the-board cuts.
