Sonora, Ca — 25th District Republican Assemblyman Tom Berryhill was in Sonora Friday to meet with Tuolumne County school leaders, and the major topic was state funding.
“I think I surprised them a little bit because I told them that I don´t want to suspend Prop. 98,” says Berryhill.
Governor Schwarzenegger has said that he is in favor of suspending the state´s education funding obligation (Proposition 98) and cutting $5 billion from the education budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1st.
“We invested into the public education system many years ago, and to borrow against that fund and shortchange education is business as usual, and this is the business that we are trying to change during this awful budget year,” adds Berryhill.
Before lawmakers discuss any types of cuts to education, Berryhill says there are other options that need to be explored. This includes investigating more public-private partnerships in the state, selling off some assets and possibly initiating a hiring freeze for some state positions.
