Governor Schwarzenegger was Tuesday’s KVML "Newsmaker of the Day". Here are his words:
"Hello, this is Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with another California Report.
This week, state legislators approved a budget that closes California’s $25 billion deficit.
This is great news for California. We have the framework in place to keep our state moving forward, while living within its means.
Congratulations to the legislators for reaching this agreement and for putting the people first.
Believe me, these negotiations were very difficult and everyone will feel the pain.
After all, we are in the midst of a global economic crisis. But in every difficulty, there is also opportunity.
I had three goals for this budget.
First, to make the necessary cuts so that we could balance the budget without raising your taxes.
That meant no more business as usual in Sacramento… it meant no longer requiring Californians to foot the bill for government’s overspending.
Second, I insisted on reform to ensure that we operate efficiently and eliminate waste, fraud and abuse in government.
These changes will benefit our state for years to come and save us billions and billions of dollars.
And third, to eliminate unnecessary boards and commissions, to save money and streamline government.
In these challenging economic times, we cannot afford everything we have funded in the past and we certainly cannot afford inefficiency.
The state’s budget has been approved but I want you to know that we aren’t relaxing here in Sacramento.
We are rolling up our sleeves and getting to work on the next big reforms.
We will be tackling tax reform, to rid our system of its volatility and reliance on capital gains.
And we will take on pension reform to cut down on unfunded liabilities and save the state billions of dollars.
We will not sit back and rest on our laurels.
This is the greatest state, in the greatest nation in the world and we are dedicated to moving it forward and making its future brighter than ever.
Thank you for watching and thank you for listening."
The "Newsmaker of the Day" is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
