J-59 Will Benefit From Stimulus Money

Sonora, CA — $2.3 million allocated to the Tuolumne County Transportation Council from the Federal Stimulus Package will go towards reconstructing a 12 mile stretch of J-59 from Hwy 108 to the Stanislaus County line.

“As many people know, the road has very heavy truck traffic,” says Transportation Council Director Peter Rei. “It is a very narrow roadway and we’ve had some pretty nasty accidents out there.”

“Hopefully we can improve the safety and the road conditions,” he adds.

The project will cost over $4 million, but the county already had $2 million reserved from a Transportation Bill approved a few years ago. The money was earmarked by Congressman Radanovich.

Rei says construction on J-59 could begin as early as June.
