Motherlode Golfers Concerned Over Targeted State Tax Proposal
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has introduced a proposal to tax golf games and this is concerning golf course owners, pros and superintendents.
Rick Rider, Editor and Publisher of Sierra Golfer magazine was KVML’s Wednesday Newsmaker of the Day.
The golf tax would start April 1st. According to the Governor’s Department of Finance, the expanded tax would raise more than $1 billion a year in 2009-10.
Rider believes that the golf industry is being unfairly targeted. Other recreational activities, such as skiing, are not on the tax list and Rider says now is not the time to raise taxes, simply because courses are already suffering from the economic downturn.
The 1.5% sales golf tax would apply to greens fees, driving-range fees, cart rentals and monthly dues at private clubs.
The Newsmaker of the Day can be heard each weekday morning at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47 on AM-1450 KVML.
