Sacramento, CA — 25th District Assemblyman Tom Berryhill says he’s very disappointed that Dave Cogdill has been ousted as Senate Minority Leader.
“We’re in a perfect storm right now, and there is no easy way out of this thing,” says Berryhill. “I was supporting Dave (Cogdill) and Mike (Villines), and in the Assembly we had the votes to get this budget out, good, bad or indifferent.”
Berryhill says he does not like the $14.4 billion in tax increases included in the current package, but is in favor of implementing the proposed caps on spending. Berryhill is also pleased that there are no cuts to rural public safety money.
Governor Schwarzenegger says he will not start from scratch on budget negotiations.
“Without Senator Cogdill, we would have never been able to do this budget and get as far as we have come,” says Schwarzenegger. “He is a man of strong character and someone you can trust 100 percent. He did what was right for the people and maybe not what was right for politics or the special interests.”
Cogdill has been replaced by Murietta’s Dennis Hollingsworth, a staunch anti-tax advocate. Cogdill is the lone Republican in the Senate who has endorsed the current budget package.
