Sacramento, CA — A Sacramento judge has scheduled a hearing on a lawsuit challenging the legality of Governor Schwarzenegger´s Executive Order calling for mandatory furloughs.
The Professional Engineers in California Government and the California Association of
Professional Scientists claim the governor needs legislative approval to force furloughs for state workers.
Areas of state Government that the Governor does not have authority over would not be affected, including the legislature, judicial branch and the university system. Offices that would reduce hours include the Department of Motor Vehicles, which would close on the first and third Fridays of the month.
The legal hearing is set for January 29th, while the furloughs are scheduled to begin on February 6th.
