Governor Schwarzenegger was Tuesday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”. Here are his words:
“Hello, this is Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with another California Report.
This week, I want to talk to you about our budget situation.
As you may have heard, California faces a potential $6 billion deficit in the current fiscal year, which ends on June 30, 2011.
So on Monday, I will call an emergency special session of the legislature.
This will allow us to address the problem immediately.
As a matter of fact, if you want to hear more about my proposals, I will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. on Monday.
You can watch that press conference at gov.ca.gov.
The bottom line is with a $6 billion deficit we will have to make more cuts.
It is simply unavoidable.
Now, many people have questioned my decision to call this special session given that it’s my last month of office.
Some of the legislators have said they would prefer to wait until the next Governor.
But every day of inaction the problem grows bigger and the cuts become more painful.
As Governor, it is also my responsibility to take action.
I took an oath to serve California until January 3rd, 2011, not until December.
So why would I stop working in December?
You cannot solve problems by waiting.
Plus, let’s be honest. That is not my style anyway.
Finally, I want to do everything I can to make the budget a little easier for the next Governor.
Because we must do everything we can to have a good transition there.
So I look forward to working with the legislators over the next few weeks and getting this done.
Thank you for watching, and thank you for listening.”
The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
