Sacramento, CA– Next week the California Supreme Court will rule whether the governor has the authority to furlough state workers.
Government employee unions are challenging Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s furlough order. Back in February of 2009 he first implemented furloughs for more than 200,000 state workers. Schwarzenegger said the move was intended to save money. The furloughs have translated to about a 14 percent pay cut.
Last month a seven-member board made up of state and union attorneys heard arguments. The governor maintains he was acting within his rights to deal with a budget crisis, but labor attorneys say he violated collective-bargaining law. The court says it will issue its ruling on Monday.
