Governor Schwarzengger was Tuesday’s KVML "Newsmaker of the Day". Here are his words:
"Hello, this is Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with another California Report.
This week we mark a new era of government in California.
That is because Californians went to the polls and approved Proposition 14.
The passage of Proposition 14 which will bring open primaries to California is a historic victory for our state and for our people.
For too many years you have watched government fail over and over again.
You’ve watched a political system that has become paralyzed by ideology.
I know you are sick and tired of the gridlock the late budgets and the billion dollar deficits.
You’re sick and tired of major issues like budget reform, pension reform and tax reform going untouched.
For California to win, politics as usual must lose.
Redistricting, which we passed two years ago, is part of the solution.
The rest of the solution is open primaries.
Open primaries will encourage more reasonable candidates.
It will force them to appeal to the broadest number of voters, not just the far left or the far right.
It will free the legislators from their ideological straitjackets, so they can meet in the middle and get stuff done.
Most importantly, it will reduce the power of the political parties and give it back to the people, which is exactly where it belongs.
Open primaries and redistricting will fundamentally change the way Sacramento operates.
In fact, not since the days of Hiram Johnson, 100 years ago, has California undergone such a dramatic period of political reform.
And it is because people like you, who stood up, went to the polls, and voted for change.
Thank you for watching and thank you for listening."
The "Newsmaker of the Day" is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am
