Radanovich Reacts To Health Care Reform Bill

Washington, D.C. — 19th District Republican Congressman George Radanovich had this reaction to the Sunday evening passage by the House of Representatives of the Health Care Reform Bill.

“Today I cast my vote to stop a government takeover of one-sixth of our economy. The health care legislation that passed today (Sunday) committed our overdrawn and bloated government to taking on another task that it cannot handle; health care. The government cannot be depended on to deliver adequate, responsible or efficient patient care to American families and seniors that need it. The American public made it perfectly clear to its leaders that it wants nothing to do with this socialist centralization of power over their private health choices, and the American people were willfully ignored by Congress and the Obama Administration.

I believe that this Congress had a great opportunity to work together to fix the current health care system in ways that would have increased patient choice and reduced costs for all Americans. However, President Obama and Speaker Pelosi chose instead to override public outrage on a bill of enormous historical magnitude. Over the past year Democrat leadership repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to deceive the public with procedural tricks and underhanded tactics. Because the legislation that passed today was so toxic, the Speaker was forced to use sweetheart deals and arm-twisting to buy the votes to ensure passage.

The result is a bill that will increase premiums for millions of families by $2,100 per year more than if Congress did nothing at all. This legislation will also cause as many as nine million people to lose the coverage that they currently have and like. The reconciliation legislation increases the federal budgetary commitment to health care to about $390 billion between 2010 and 2019, overextending, once again, the federal debt load.

It is a shame to see the slippery slope of debt and government control that our nation has been sliding down during the past year, and the passage of this health care monstrosity is truly a travesty. There is no “delete” button on this terrible health care package that costs exceedingly more than it will benefit any member of society. The American public knows this, and the election results of Republican Senator Scott Brown (R-Massachusetts) reveal that the American people are opposed to this government takeover of health care. It is also distressing that the leadership deliberately defied public opinion, steamrolling this legislation through Congress by whatever means necessary, stooping to use an unprecedented budget reconciliation procedure for a highly controversial, extremely weighty overhaul of the health care system.

This bill will hurt Americans for generations to come, starting with the debt that will be passed on to our children and grandchildren. According to the bipartisan Congressional Budget Office the total cost of the Reconciliation bill is nearly $1.2 trillion.

Additionally the bill will increase federal spending on Medicaid to $434 billion. The bill includes $528.5 billion cuts in the Medicare program, cutting benefits and raising premiums for seniors. The bill will reclaim increased expenditures through a government takeover of the student loan industry, and using the loan repayment to offset $19.4 billion in costs.

This political strong-arming of the largest social legislation since the creation of Social Security through Congress is something that will be remembered in the coming elections by votes who value individual freedom, not the statist regime of government-knows-best that President Obama has imposed on the American people. This November I cannot wait to see champions of fiscal responsibility, personal liberty, and responsive governance ultimately triumph over tyrannical top down government control The American people do not want this legislation and they are being willfully ignored by the Democratic majority in Congress and the Obama Administration.

Rest assured I will continue to fight this takeover of the health care system at every opportunity.”
