Arrest Following Three Hour Valley Springs Standoff

Valley Springs, CA — A man was arrested in Valley Springs after he allegedly threatened to blow-up his family’s home.

It happened Saturday night in the 7200 block of Baldwin Street. Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Sgt. Anthony Eberhardt says dispatch received a call reporting that 31-year-old Daniel Brian Thompson had entered his family’s home with gas cans, and threatened to kill the two people inside, ages 63 and 64.

The two family members were able to leave the home safely.  The Sheriff’s Office says when deputies arrived on scene, Thompson was holding gas cans and igniting a lighter. He proceeded to barricade himself inside the home.

“The Calaveras County Hostage Negotiation Team, SWAT Team,  and local fire departments were dispatched to the residence,” says Sgt. Eberhardt. “After three hours of negotiations, Daniel Thompson exited the residence, and was taken into custody.”

The home had a strong odor of gasoline, but it did not catch fire. Thompson was booked into Calaveras County Jail on charges related to arson and making criminal threats. It is not immediately clear what his motive was for threatening to start the home on fire.
