Modesto Congressman Gary Condit says he´s running for re-election in 2002, although it was a difficult
decision for him. On Friday, 45 minutes before the filing deadline expired, Condit submitted the documents necessary for him to join the race.
The married Democrat who was first elected in 1989 and has handily won re-election six times. His 53rd District has been re-drawn, so 40 percent of the voters are new. Several Democrats have lined up to run against him in the March primary, including state Assemblyman Dennis Cardoza, a one-time Condit aide.
The 53-year-old Condit admitted a romantic relationship with 24-year-old constituent Chandra Levy. The Washington DC intern disappeared in May.
