LAPD Wants Changes For Officers

(Los Angeles-AP) — LA Mayor Jim Hahn wants to abolish the internal LAPD Board of Rights that disciplines officers, and replace it with a civilian review system.

The change would take away the authority of Police Chief Bernard Parks to make the final decision about officers´ conduct, and the move is backed by the police union, a frequent critic of Chief Parks.

The change, which Hahn says would improve morale, would need to be approved by Los Angeles voters as an amendment to the city charter.

The mayor sent a letter to the Police Commission yesterday asking members to place the proposal on the ballot next year.
