Two people have been found dead in a house in Modesto.
Stanislaus County Sheriff´s deputies were helping a landlord serve eviction papers at the house at about 9:45 this morning. When they arrived, an occupant shot the landlord, Doyle Dean Smith, in the arm.
Sheriff´s deputies and Modesto police surrounded the house, and plumes of smoke began wafting out soon after. Negotiators tried in vain to contact the occupants.
At about 12:30 p.m., flames started coming out the windows. Firefighters went inside, and found two dead. The two haven´t been identified, and a cause of death hasn´t been determined.
The eviction notice was for a man named Kari McDonald. Smith told authorities McDonald hadn´t paid rent in four months.
Smith is listed in stable condition at Memorial Medical Center.
