Riordan To Run For Governor

Former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan officially entered the California governor´s race this morning.

Riordan joins two other major contenders for the Republican

nomination to try to unseat Democratic Governor Davis.

The 71 year-old mayor made his announcement at a downtown LosAngeles rally after being introduced by actor Arnold

Schwarzenegger. Riordan said he´s running for governor for a very simple reason. In his words, “I love California.´´

A Field Poll last month showed Riordan roughly even with Davis but ahead of his two likely Republican rivals in the March primary.

Riordan was mayor of the nation´s second-largest city for eight years until term limits prevented him from seeking a third term

this year.
