Crime rates in California have dropped dramatically, more so than the rest of the country.
The FBI statistics show that many of the state´s metropolitan areas have plummeted in the agency´s national crime rankings for 2000.
The state´s best-known cities Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego, all saw a significant decrease in violent and property crimes. Just a few years ago, four inland communities earned the dubious distinction of being among the nation´s 50 most crime-ridden cities. All but one of those cities have dropped out of the top 50.
Fresno has dropped from number 10 to number 44. It´s among the nation´s top five cities for motor vehicle theft and is the only California city to rank in the top FIVE of any major crime
