Davis To Hire During Job Freeze
Governor Gray Davis can continue to fill positions in his office and other high-level state jobs, despite a state government hiring freeze he mandated last week.
Other departments cannot replace workers who leave or retire under the executive order the Democratic governor signed Tuesday. Davis issued the order after learning the state could face a 14 billion dollar budget shortfall next year. Some lawmakers and tax reform groups say the governor ought to follow the rules he sets for others.
