Police say San Jose hate crimes against Arabs,
Afghans, Sikhs and others of Middle Eastern
appearance appear to have declined from last week. San Jose police say 16 incidents have been reported since the September eleventh terrorist attacks on
New York and Washington.
The incidents range from ethnic slurs left on telephone answering machines to a mutilated rat thrown at the front porch of a
home. Halel Omeira, executive director of the Santa Clara-based
Council on American-Islamic Relations, said hate incidents continue, particularly
against Middle Eastern women who wear head scarves. He says women often do not report hate crimes for fear it would cause more abuse.
