State utility regulators have refused to let California´s two largest utilities lay off thousands of employees in an
attempt to balance their books.
The Public Utilities Commission voted 4-to-1 in San Francisco to bar Pacific Gas and Electric and Southern California
Edison from laying off a total of 3-thousand workers.
Utility watchdogs said the layoffs would severely impact the ability of the companies to make
timely repairs in the event of outages and would hurt reliability.
Commissioner Carl Wood said service is closely tied to staffing levels.
