The recent storms which have battered Northern California have stirred up the sea bed around a sunken tanker off the Golden Gate, releasing oil which killed more than 100 sea birds.
The steamer Jacob Luckenbach was the target of a $19 million cleanup which ended in September. Environmentalist expressed dismay yesterday that the work apparently failed to halt the flow of oil from the 50-year-old wreck.
Thousands of birds died before 85,000 gallons of oil were removed from the Luckenbach. Authorities believe the storms rocked the ship, releasing trapped oil which could not be removed.
