State Budget Tab To Hit $35 Billion

Governor Davis is expected to announce soon that California’s budget deficit will reach a staggering $34.8 billion over the next 18 months.

Davis told a Los Angeles radio station that his top economic advisers estimate the shortfall could hit about $30 billion. But sources close to the budget figures told The Associated Press that he will announce that the figure will be closer to an unprecedented $35 billion.

Republicans have said they will block any budget that includes higher taxes but Davis told the Los Angeles radio station early today that he likely will call for increases and asked lawmakers to put aside “rigid ideology.”
