Governor Davis has named the sole Republican senator to support this year’s state budget to lead the troubled Department of Veterans Affairs.
Davis says there´s no link between the appointment of former Senator Maurice Johannessen of Redding and the budget vote.
Johannessen is the department’s fourth secretary in as many years. He promises to shake up the department in line with his business background and 17 years as a legislator and local politician.
Johannessen will oversee the construction of five new veterans´ homes over the next decade – in west Los Angeles, Lancaster, Saticoy, the Central Valley and Shasta County. The department now operates three homes, with which it has had continued problems.
