A doctors group wants one of the top chicken producers in the country to stop claiming its meat is all natural.
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine plans to file suit today in San Francisco County Superior Court seeking an injunction against Tyson Foods. The group is best known for pushing vegetarian diets.
In its complaint, the physician group says Tyson chickens are treated with antibiotics, which can cause allergic reactions in humans and may contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant organisms.
The group also takes issue with Tyson’s promotion of its chicken as “heart-healthy,” and says chicken is high in saturated fat and cholesterol.
A Tyson spokesman says the federal government regulates the company’s “heart-healthy” claims. He says Tyson only uses antibiotics to treat flocks that have been diagnosed with disease.
