Oregon officials say landowners should be wary of offers by mail to sell off their timber.
About 2,800 owners of small parcels of Klamath County forestlands recently received such solicitations. The letters, from contracting company Western Timber Brokers of Medford, offer 50 dollars per one thousand board feet of timber. Company foreman Charlie Davies says Western Timber Brokers scours county government and Internet records for small parcels, because it is too small to compete for larger jobs.
He says people can reduce fire damage and earn extra money for the holidays if they agree to sell. But state officials say landowners should explore all options, go through a bidding process and draw up a formal contract before selling off timber.
